– The yard
A reporter is standing in front of the camera. Behind the reporter it`s visible a foosball table. The reporter starts to talk about the new acquisition purchased by the university. The cameraman makes a panning showing a long line of people, who are waiting their turn to play. The reporter begins to ask questions to the people standing in the row. He (the reporter) talks with 2 or 3 people and then asks questions to one of the teams playing. Because of that the couple of players (to which the reporter asked questions) are distracted and loses the match. They lose their turn to play and now another couple wants to play, but the first couple doesn`t want to drop and they blame the reporter. Here is when a fight begins between the first couple and the couple that wants to take their turn to play. They start hitting each other and the reporter is so impressed that he comes closer to them (he calls the cameraman to go with him and film the fight closer). They came so close that the cameraman receives a punch and so the camera loses control and fade to black. So that there`s a cut and we (the viewers/spectators) get back to the studio where the anchor woman says that apparently they (as a newscast) have some technical difficulties and they have to go on with another news. The end.
Hope and Love
I think the”delicious liquid”, of which Almásy talks about, represents a source of life, the hope Katherine and Almásy are looking for in a place where they can see no shelter, no food or water. He said they could cut the plant, but anyway it will be full of hope the next day… it would be full of life even though it should be dead. So, I think he`s comparing the plant and its liquid with himself and his feelings for Katherine. Their love has no “shelter” and it seems it has no hope too, but despite that, and even though he cut out his heart every night, his love for Katherine remains in his soul, like a delicious liquid that appears every morning.
Hana is my favorite character of the movie because I found her very kindhearted and pure. Through the movie you can see she is a really strong and determined woman too. She was forced to mature really fast and had to carry on with her life after the cruelties of war and her boyfriend`s death. She becomes into a nurse in a very hostile world, just wanting to help others and heal all the pain she finds. I admire her because she also has to face her dad`s death all by herself, and if you bring together all the story of her life, you may think she should be an ice hearted woman, with a short temper and cold feelings, but she is quite the opposite! And after all the drama she passed through her life she still cares about others and looks after the English patient with a really touching love and warmth. I think Hana`s character is very paradoxical and interesting, because although she is very mature for her age, she still plays like a little girl and sees the world with innocent eyes, thinking that everyone is nice and noble. This point can be represented in how she thinks of the English patient, seeing him as a hero when she doesn`t even know him.
